In this article, we take a look at how to have your WordPress website installed with the most secure setup possible.
When it comes to maintain strong security with your WordPress website, you have to start from the very beginning. By starting with a secure WordPress installation you are putting yourself in the strongest position possible. On the other hand, if you were to ignore the installation process and were to install WordPress using a standard installation method, even though strong security is achievable it wouldn’t be as strong as it could be. On that note, here we are going to be looking at how to install WordPress in a way which will strongly support your website’s security.
Secure WordPress Hosting
How you secure WordPress website depends on your hosting; to an extent. There are many hosting options out there, although the two most common options are to pay for a host or to host the websites yourself.
Paying for a Host. The majority of hosts who specialize in website hosting will allow you to select a website platform, install it for you, and let you go from there. The big downside to this is that you don’t have full control over the installation process and in fact, have virtually no control over it.
Hosting Websites, Yourself. Hosting and setting up your website on your own is, understandably, a difficult task. Or at least it seems that way. When it comes to setting up a web service and installing WordPress, it seems like a dauntingly scary task to do. A task which at first, you think to yourself that if you do something wrong it’s the end of the world. In reality, it’s not too difficult to do and after doing it the first time, you’ll be able to do it with confidence in the future. Furthermore, by hosting a website yourself you have full control over the installation process, thus you have full control over your WordPress site security.
All in all, if at all possible it is in your best interest to host your website on a web server which you have set up yourself. As we said above, paying for a host is a viable option but you will be putting yourself at a security disadvantage.
Below are some of the things worth keeping in mind whilst installing WordPress which will help you to set it up in a way which optimizes your security.
Database Prefix. This is one of the big points and while for some this may seem complicated, it’s fairly easy to do. Whilst performing a secure WordPress installation you will be prompted to enter a database name to link the website to. By default, the database prefix will be “wp_”. The issue with keeping this as the prefix is that if a hacker targets your website, they will have an easier time to discover the name of your database table. Simply change the database prefix during the installation and your security will be taken to a much higher level.
Admin Password. Your admin WordPress account has full control over the website and with that, you must make sure that it never gets compromised. A good way to make sure of this is to change the password regularly and add two-factor authentication to your website.
Install the Most Recent WordPress. This should go without saying, although there are a minority of people who choose to install earlier versions of WordPress for plugin compatibility reasons. In most WordPress updates there are security updates which accompany it. Some of these security updates are small, others are huge. Regardless, it’s important that you install the most recent WordPress version and keep it up to date.
If you take each of these points into close consideration when installing WordPress, you will have a very secure WordPress website.
